[libtorrent] Exchange between peers

I have an existential doubt about the library libtorrent

I know that there is a way to exchange pieces, the question is:

The exchange between the peers is done mainly at the block level, or
is it only possible to exchange pieces?

In bittorrent, the largest piece of payload one can request is 16 kiB (by
convention). By libtorrent terminology, this is a block. i.e. all payload
is requested at the block level.
